Wrestling For Self Defense

What is the most effective martial art for self defense? Offense?

I am a former high school wrestler who has gotten involved in judo because the wrestling translates very well to judo. I seem to be able to learn judo techniques very easily.

Ed Parker style American Kenpo is very effective self defense. It is not a sport or an art, is mean and nasty with lots strikes to the throat, groin, eyes and breaking joints. Perhaps it is because most of the teachers and students in my particular Dojo are current or former Super Max prison guards and actually use the stuff on a regular basis that it has a very hard edge to it. I think Grand Master Parker said it best "it is not who is right it is who is left"

Is it ever ok to use a knife in self-defense?

The past two years, i have been coming down with various acute illnesses for no aparent reason and my body has gotten alot weaker. So, i decided to put my efforts into weapons training and move more away from physical arts (kung fu,wrestling,e ct). Iam practicing Arnis, and military knife combat training tactics. Iam knowledgable about self-defense laws (unarmed) but not armed. What are the laws considering knives for self-defense. I hope i never get into a situation where i absolutely have to use it, but, it would be good to know to protect myself.

This imay sound crazy on the surface but it is true and I will explain why in a moment. While I am not advising arming yourself in violation of any law, I will tell you that is less of a violation in most jurisdictions to carry a gun concealed than is for a knife or a club or other striking or stabbing weapon. The reason is that most people will resort to a knife or other weapon much faster than they will to a gun because of a belief that other weapons are not so deadly. Wrong. Plus a gun has a tendency to defuse a situation by it's display whereas knives and striking weapons often can and do, merely alter the forms of combat taking place, and so are less dangerous for that reason. Of course once a gun is in play, there is often only one way for the situation to end. My personal advice to you is, either get a license to carry a pistol and become very proficiient with it's use and safe handling, so as not to be a danger to innocent folks or if you want to carry a knife, carry it legally. Most states allow persons without felony convictions to carry a knife as long as it is open to view and carried in a sheath or other case designed to hold a knife and suspended from the beltline of the wearer. Finally, a talk with local law enforcement will go a long way toward helping you to know what to do in your individual circumstances.
