Women Empowering

Do you believe in empowering women to get in the kitchen more and make homecooked meals? Can I have an amen?

I believe it is important to empower women with appliances, ovens, pots, pans, and grocery money to get good homecooked meals prepared.

Not in all cases. Only those who accept this as their role in life.

Why do people preface statements that are empowering to women with "I'm not a feminist, but..."?

I hear this all the time from women I know and respect, and it is really bewildering to me. What are they trying to say?

"I don't usually support ideas that promote the equality of women, but..."

"I'm not a bra-burning lesbian, but..."

"I'm not trying to threaten anyone's masculinity by making a statement that is pro-woman, but..."

Any other theories would be appreciated, and if you do this yourself, please explain.

You are referring to "the disconnect between feminist self-identification and attitudes among the U.S. public. These findings point to more multifaceted and heterogeneous meanings of feminist identity among the U.S. public than most research acknowledges. Results suggest that feminists are most likely to be highly educated, urban women who self-identify as liberals and Democrats. Feminist self-identification significantly relates to views about the impact of the women’s movement and to core causes of gender inequality."

They are afraid to self-identify; the backlash has intimidated them. These women have been the object of study because of the contradictory nature betweeen what they say and what they believe regarding gender equality. The ones unwilling to self-identify are usually young, and tend to be less educated. As we grow older we 'grow into our own' - we become more self-assured and less afraid of what other people may think. What I am suggesting is that there is still hope they will grow out of it.
