Does the concept of 'Girl Power' empower women or exploit them?

It is supposed to be empowering (that word has become too associated with women now) but it has the side effect of demeaning men and boys.

Girl Power was very much a 90s thing. I remember it being very popular among young girls back then, but it kind of died down in the 00s. The idea was to make girls and women proud of their gender. The result was bordering on arrogance, and I'm sure many of the men here know the look they get from some over-proud women, the down-the-nose, condescending, disgusted look these self-righteous women give to men that don't live up the their Hollywood induced standards.

I don't think it exploits them, however one could argue that it exploits them in that it encourages them to purchase particular styles of clothing that have 'Girl Power' slogans on them - buying in to a particular style.

I think girl power was nothing more than a modern feminist (post-feminists) attempt to overcome the apparent discrimination in education against girls - which in itself is a complete myth: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200005/war-against-boys and http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=2&ved=0CAkQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thisislondon.co.uk%2Fstandard%2Farticle-23796870-eton-head-says-uk-education-fails-boys.do&rct=j&q=eton+head+thisislondon&ei=qExcS9jiJpi80gTqleiDBQ&usg=AFQjCNHWmxb8qACTFiVE9BPrZpm3veBq0Q) These modern feminists have been sucked up by the already victorious cause of feminism and are actually blind to the social damage they are inflicting (either that or they are simply man haters).
