Wing Chun Self Defense
For self defense instructors please help!?
I need some advise. I teach Wing Chun Kung Fu private lessons my charge is $20/hr and I set up my business so that I go to a clients house give them the first lesson for free and then they can decide if they want to do private lessons in their homes. So the minimum I charge is $80 a month.
Here is my problem I get about 3 calls a day I talk to them about Wing Chun and I give them the prices and the usual answer is let me talk to my wife or check my schedule and I will call you back.
I haven't ever gotten a call back. So I think its either they feel uncomfortable with me going to their house, or the price?
please help what can I do?
You are playing a very risky and dangerous game. I taught group classes and private lesson up until i closed my dojo. Since then I teach privately. I never go to anyone. They come to my home. I'm very choosy about who I will allow. People generally don't want outsiders in their home. It is better to have them come to your home or even better a commercial building. NEVER EVER have private lessons with a Woman/girl, unless their is a chaperon present !!!!!
The other problems with your setup besides the legal liability are:
1) You don't charge enough. Especially since you go to them. You lose the travel expenses as well as your time driving. In 1997 when I closed my dojo I charged $25 per half hour. Late students got only the time remaining till the end of their lesson. If you don;t charge them for being late, you will always be losing money and pushing back your time and the next students. They show up on time, or they pay anyway. ***** charging lower rates than your competitors is a big mistake new instructors make. It will not get you more students no matter what prospective students tell you they can afford...... If you don;t believe me, All you have to do is go visit the schools that have the most students,..... They always are the most expensive schools too....! *****
2) students should be required to set up an appointment at least one day in advance. If you are at a school and will be there, you can allow students to call and see if you are free is they come in.
3) Students are allowed to cancel a private lesson that is to be in the morning as long as they do it before 8:00pm the night before. If the have an afternoon or evening lesson, they have until 6 hours before the lesson to cancel. Otherwise they must pay for the lesson.
To be fair, You must give them a free lesson if you are not able to teach them at a time you both agreed on.
4) Schedules are made up one week in advance, only. No one can just book the same time every week in advance. If they want the same time each week, they must register for it each week so as to give other students a chance to have that time slot sometimes too.
5) Most of your students will come from recommendations from your current students. I give them a free private lesson, if they get me a new student. The hard part is getting established with a few regular students. Once you do that then you will be able to get more students from the referrals.
NOTE: the last few years I ran my dojo, I did this. I taught group classes several nights a week. Students had to sing up each week for the week coming. That way I knew who and how many were coming. Each class was limited to 10 students. Students paid $85.00 a month to come to group classes. Then they could schedule private lessons as I stated above for an extra $25.00 per half hour. My dojo was 30 miles from my home. So I went to the dojo early in the morning, if I had private lesson scheduled. If not I did not go until later. Often, there would be 2-5 private lessons early (starting as early as 6:00am). then if no lesson were scheduled I might go home until the afternoon. Each day was different. some days i was at the dojo all day and then at night. Other days, i was there only a few hours. Private lessons could be scheduled 7 days a week from 6:00am to 8:00 or 9:00pm. But everything had to be agreed upon between me and the student. In late 1997 I closed the dojo to go back to college full time. From January 1st until I closed the Dojo in late Sept., I had taught over 1,300 private lessons + the group classes. My dojo was about the size of a two car garage. Rent was only $500 a month. Now I teach only hand picked students at my home. The rates are higher now too.

Wing Chun Self Defense
Muay Thai vs Wing Chun?
Which would you go with? I take muay thai but one of my friends told me he takes wing chun and I researched it and it looks really effective how they move in really close so you can't punch them. What one do you think is more effective in terms of self defense.
Both are potentially very effective, it's impossible to determine which one is better, since it comes down to the practitioner.
