Wing Chun For Self Defense
Which two should I take out of these martial arts?
What one or two martial arts should I take out of these three ITF Taekwondo, Judo, or Wing chun. I want to take martial arts for fitness, self defense, endurance, confidence, as a sport (kinda,) and discipline. Which one or two martial arts should I take for those reasons and say why. Your answers will be appreciated.
Pretty much anybody can do Taekwondo as it is a very well balanced martial art. It's probably a good choice with either one of the other two. You'll get good fitness with it as it's warm ups are very generic, and it has a good pace to it.
Judo involves a lot of throws and a lot of close quarters contact. Supposedly anybody of any size can do it, but in reality it puts strain on your upper body so if you have weak shoulders it may not be for you due to all of the throws and locks involved. If you are skinny or bruise easily then you may also wish to avoid it due to the close contact. You might also have some problems if you have a thing about touching people of getting touched. As you will need to put your hands on people and they will put their hands on you. Some of this happens near to personal areas of your body. So some people get embarrassed about it.
Other people are find with it.
Judo is good if you have a moderate temperament. It's not as fiery as Taekwondo can be, or as aggressive. But it is still an effective martial art. It's good if somebody grabs you or puts their hands on you, which is why it's a recommended self defense for women.
Personally, I don't like allowing people to come close enough to me to need to use Judo on them, I prefer the range and distance of Taekwondo. If they are close enough to throw, I'd like to have kicked their head off three times over by then.
Judo is a great confidence builder as it does allow you to take on a much larger opponent who a kick or punch would bounce right off. It's also good as you can be good at judo without needing to be particularly physically fit or super flexible. You allow your opponent to come to you and attack you, and you use a defensive technique to counter them.
If you're big, then Judo will also suit you, as it also allows a weighty person to fight without the need for a lot of speed and to use their weight to their advantage.
Wing Chun usually requires you to be fitter than Judo and more flexible than Taekwondo to start with. It's a more intensive martial are and you need to be fitter to work harder to get the most out of it. It's not really one for beginners unless you have good flexibility and a good sense of balance form another sport like gymnastics though there are many beginners classes out there. It will be harder going at first than either of the other two, but it's great if you already have good speed and stamina. I'ts also good if you are a light weight person as it teaches you to dodge and to strike accurately without the need for a lot of physical strength or big muscles.
It's not a popular sport with women as it can be a bit intense at times and quite competitive.
you might also want to consider which classes are easiest to get to. Martial arts can tire you out. You don't want to be have to walk for an hour to get home because your class isn't on a bus route, or because it finishes after the buses have stopped for the night.
