Weapons Of Self Defense

What is the best self defense weapon?

For a white collar 9-5 kind of person living in the city. Dont' want problems. just want to be protected just in case.

pepper sprays? mace? loud personal alarms? switch blade? firearms?

I would go for mace, it's environmentally friendly, yay! Anyway new laws mean you can put your attakcer ina headlock untill police arrive, and armed with mace and a good headlock technique you should be safe if you get attacked,

a far better way to defend yourself is common sense, don't become a victim.

Where can you find out which self defense weapons are legal in Washington State?

Does anyone know where you can find the actual law outlining what kinds of self defense weapons (i.e. pepper spray, mace, stun batons, tazers, ect) are legal for an individual to own in Washington State and what kind of license, if any, you need to carry these items?

I would love to get a link to a .gov website with this information wrather than some random website on the internet so I know the information is actually correct.

Thanks

What you are looking for is the State Code, that is, the actual laws themselves. Below I have provided a link to the Revised Code of Washington, specifically Chapter 9.41 which contains all laws on weapons, including guns.

Since laws are hard to read, I will provide some guidance and try to sum these up. First, There are laws on guns and there are laws on everything else that isn't a gun. That's just how American law works most of the time.

For guns, Washington is a "shall-issue" state. This means if you are old enough and have a clean background, you can get a permit to carry a concealed handgun without having to be a cop or security guard. You apply, you qualify, you get a permit, no trouble. This permit is only good for handguns and does not apply to other weapons. There are no permits for other weapons.

For non-firearms it gets more complicated (see 9.41.250). There are laws on ownership, and laws on carrying.
On the statute's face, it appears to be illegal to manufactures, sell, or dispose of or possess a "slung shot or sandclub" (this means a blackjack, a small weighted club for bashing heads), metal knuckles, or a switchblade (a knife that opens automatically when you press a button).
It is legal to own, but not legal to carry a doubled edged knife (a dagger or "dirk") concealed.

There is not mention of pepper spray, batons, or any electrical weapon anywhere in the law. This makes them legal to own and to carry technically, because there is no law prohibiting them. However there are two caveats:
1. Local cities have the right to make their own weapon laws. Be wary of what your city ordinances are; the vast majority are published online publicly and free to access.
2. It is illegal to openly carry ANY weapon in such a manner than it alarms those around you or intimidates another person. So if you carry a legal weapon, carry it concealed. (9.41.270)
