Umbrella Self Defense

Why don't martial arts teach you to use weapons..?

I know they teach black belts..to use weapons like the sword and the bo...but in real life..why dont these school teach you to use some thing like a knife or maybe even an ice scraper ..some thing you might have in your car ..or some thing at home..some thing you might even carry with you with out getting arrested..like umbrella..instead they teach you useless katas..that you need to preform hundreds of times ..what ever happen to real self defense...

my advice: find another style. there are quite a few that teach you how to turn everything into a weapon. try krav maga. its an Israeli combat system that was originally taught to soldiers for urban guerrilla warfare. so its basically fighting using whatever you can get your hands on. its a lot more practical than traditional arts like karate and TKD.

Self Defense Tips?

Well lets see, where you go, you never know when you can get attacked or robbed, so you gotta be prepared, i know this seems like a very inappropiate question but where i live is highly dangerous.
Usually, there's gangs, robbers, baddies and all sorts of crazy beeps, and i usually walk home, rather than using train or bus because well, forget it, they're too crowded anyway.
Most of the time, the people who were attacked or robbed, we're severly injured or killed after the situation or event.
So its like hurt or be hurt, actually, defend your yourselve to give you time to run while the enemy is knocked down and never gets up (unconcious -.-) or you get killed
seems out of the ordinary, but there's been too many robberies, kidnappings and random deaths, its staggering to me
besides, i use a messenger bag, an umbrella
i use lynx spray to burn the eyes lol (my bag has easy acces really quick)
anyone got any new ideas to defend? no guns or peper spray they're not allowed in aussie!

Well, kneeing or twisting the groin area works well, unless the subject have on a cup. An elbow jab to the abdomen is also good. A punch to the adam's apple or the neck area should give you a few minutes to escape, however, that can, and I mean can, be dangerous if not done the right way, its suppose to make it harder for the subject to breathe . Keys make great defense weapon. A shin strike works well too, and if you're held in a bear hug, swing your head back hard, since the nose is sensitive.
