Tai Chi Chuan Self Defense

Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) as a practical form of self defense?

Who on here feels their Taijiquan or knows a practitioner of this method who practices this method can realistically apply it in a self defense situation?

Let me preface this by saying, I like this method's theory and practice. I think it is functional, IF it is practiced as it was meant to be practiced. And would like to communicate with those who have a similar opinion. However, I'm finding it very hard to find a many ppl who are not trapped by the jargon and misunderstanding of its practice.

Taijiquan is first and foremost a martial art. People have adapted it to health and fitness merely because there actually are health benefits to it, but most of those who practice for health's sake omit the martial application of it. There is nothing wrong with this for their devices since they don't practice it for a martial art. There actually is a difference between "Taiji" and Taijiquan", the latter being the martial art rather than the philosophy.

That being stated, I have used Taijiquan in a self-defense situation. Now I didn't use a single-whip into parting the wild horse's mane to finish off with a needles to sea-bottom or anything like that, but I applied principles of no instance/no resistance and utilized other methods of southern Chinese boxing. In all fairness, though, I easily could have performed a movement from Taijiquan, but it wasn't my first reaction. At that point, the arts are blended to a degree, such that I don't use one over the other; I simply use what is applicable at the time.

Is Tai Chi Chuan Good for Self-Defense?

There is a martial arts place in my hometown, and a guy runs the class for $65 a month for twice a week. He also learned from a Grandmaster if that makes any difference.

Anyone have any experience with this martial art? I'd like to learn something for self-defense. I'm also looking at karate.

When taught properly, Taijiquan is an incredible martial art. It's techniques cover everything from striking, grappling, throwing, wrestling, joint manipulation, and controlling an assailant. There is bare-hand training as well as weapons training. Also the understanding of proper body mechanics and the health benefits are outstanding. However, you have to be lucky enough to learn from an instructor who knows these techniques and how to teach them. Unfortunately there are very few instructors in the West who can offer this level of instruction. Who is your instructor and what is his lineage? If he learned from a legitimate Grandmaster and has this Grandmaster's permission to teach, then that might mean something.

Good luck with this.
