Is Taekwondo really effective as self defense?

How do you know?

Totally depends on the person not the art.

Every one has this misconception one style is better than another when it is more the fighter makes the style work or not!

what martial art style would you recommend that is good for realistic self defense training?

i've tried shotokan karate and taekwondo but didnt really like them . too much stuff that was of no use for what i want to learn
