Can I keep a Stun Gun or Pepper Spray at home for self-defense,if I live in New York?

Hi,
Could someone help me to understand the Law of possessing a stun gun or pepper spray for self-defence?
I've heard and read that it's illegal to have these tools in New York state?

It should be illegal all over the U.S. Those are not effective tools for home protection, I suggest a 12 guage shot gun which is totally legal to own. A 12 guage is effective for home defense.
