Small Self Defense Weapons

What is the safest 9mm pistol?

I am looking for the safest 9mm handgun - I have taken a firearm safety course and this will be a self-defense weapon only - am looking for something small/sleek so it is out of the way. I've heard Glocks can have safety issues - I want something that wont easily go off if its dropped / jiggled, or if someone had picked it up and were fooling with it. Just looking for recommendations. Thanks,

All guns are dangerous.

The safety is between your ears.

Learn the four rules for safe gun handling, and any gun you touch will be as safe as you are. Assuming it's mechanically sound, of course.

(1) Treat every gun as if it were loaded.

(2) Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot.

(3) Never let the muzzle point at anything you aren't willing to destroy.

(4) Always identify your target, and know what's behind it.

That being said, it seems like you're looking for a concealed carry weapon. You didn't list a price range, so if cost is no object, you could try one of the Kahr pistols. They're a little bit like Glocks in terms of function, but they're much smaller. Or, you could go with the Springfield Armory EMP (Enhanced Micro Pistol), which is a tiny 1911-style pistol, chambered in 9mm.

If you're on a budget, the Taurus Millenium Pro is a good gun--small, concealable, and holds 10+1 rounds.

If your budget is tight, try a Kel-Tec P11, which is ugly, but reliable. And cheap.

Any self-defense advice?

With all the news about people dissapearing and/or raped I've decided that I should learn some self-defense skills. I'm planning to attend some classes in the future but I would like to know if there's any advice someone could give me.

I'm still a teenager but I can run and kick well. Upper body strength is one of those things I need to work on. I read somewhere that carrying a small weapon of some kind is recommended just incase. But they don't allow pepper spray (and most likely a pocket knife) to be on someone in my area.

I know I'm the paranoid type but it'd be helpful if somebody would give me some advice on how to protect myself

First off, no advise anyone gives you on the internet is going to suffice. The second someone says something is or isn't one way, Murphy's Law dictates it'll be exactly the opposite. I suggest acquainting yourself with Murphy's Law before carrying a weapon, specifically corollary that if multiple things can go wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one that goes wrong.

If you are serious about learning to defend yourself, Frank is absolutely correct – stop what you're doing, stop making excuses why you can't, and start training. The most dangerous and potentially life-saving weapon you will ever possess is your mind. Train your awareness, stay away from dangerous areas... Self defense is about prioritizing your life: If at 10pm you forgot that you need money tomorrow morning at 8am, get up 30 minutes earlier in the morning to go get cash, rather than going out in the dark.

Weapons serve one purpose: to allow you to increase the distance between you and the adversary. If you make a wrong turn and end up in an alley with someone who intends you harm, a firearm (effectively a distance weapon) is of no use to you, will likely be taken from you without significant retention skill, and will more than likely be used to kill you.

Avoid the typical women's self-defense course. Find a genuine martial art or combat sport to build your confidence, as the most likely target is an unaware, unconfident woman. Train, train, train. You're not going to stop every would-be abductor/rapist in the world – but your body language can tell him that it's in his best interests to find another victim.

Good luck, and train well – your life is on the line.
