self defense technique?

i have a lot of guys who tend to mess with me. and ill admit i get intimidated real easily. im not in the best shape and short for my age. is there a simple technique or anything i can do when someone comes up to me and starts giving me lip. just like a simple arm twist or anything really

This isn't going to be a popular answer, but the best thing you can do is simply avoid the places and people where this happens. If you CAN'T avoid them, for some serious reason, then your next best choice is to always take one or more friends.

If someone comes up to you and gives you lip, just take it, ignore it. That is life. Just keep on walking. Most "lip," taunts and shoves are just provocations to try to get you to take a swing or do something stupid so that the bully can then beat the living *&W^$) out of you, and then claim that you started it. This is the same no matter your age, and no matter the venue.

Sometimes you just have to take a beating or humiliation not because it is the right thing to do, but because you know that if you respond, it will either get worse, or you'll end up having to cause some serious damage to someone to make it stop.

And that is where self defense comes in. True self defense is about awareness, avoidance, de-escalation, fighting to escape, and recovery. It sounds to me like you don't need self defense, but what you need is self respect and wisdom. Bullies pick on people who they perceive as being weak and vulnerable -- and they are usually right about this to some degree.

You already stated that you are not in good shape and are short. There is no "simple arm twist" that works on an aggressive, stronger opponent unless you've already beaten them senseless or have them completely outmatched in some way.

If these are just passive bullies who are getting their jollies by picking on you, you might get left alone if you fight back. Or it might backfire and result in you getting the beating of your life. Only you can know this.

If you do genuinely want to learn self defense, then you should seek out a class that is specifically for self defense. If you can't find one, then Krav Maga, Jujitsu, Hapkido or Kempo would be good secondary choices.

PS -- The nickname "spanky" isn't going to help you avoid getting picked on.

Wing Chun Demonstration: Is It Worth It?

Here's the situation:
For an upcoming campus culture show, I've volunteered to be part of a Kung fu skit, which I'm doing with a friend. Our part in question will run for about a minute (the other four minutes are a solo demonstration) and will consist of a pre-choreographed fight scene demonstrating the application of Kung Fu in physical self defense. While my friend is well-versed in Northern Crane, I personally have learned Wing Chun about a year ago and practiced consistently for five months.
Since it was a study abroad program, I haven't had access to Wing Chun since then. However, I've committed most of the techniques to muscle memory. For the demonstration, should I really volunteer to be part of the fight scene? I know that WC techniques are relatively simple, but fear that since it's been months, I may not pull off the moves correctly and embarass myself. Should I still go ahead and be part of this demonstration or just back out b/c of such "inexperience"?

You are being humble, the sign of a great master in the making. You have volunteered and should go and do it. Confidence is one of the steps you must take to become a master of the Martial Arts. I am not a Master, and want to stay humble too. But confidence is important, plus this is a chance for you to test yourself, ask yourself after the performance, What can I do to greater my skills in the Art?
