Shotgun For Self Defense

Best 12 gauge shotgun ammo for self defense?

I have heard that 00 buck is the best for self defense, and from what I read, 00 buckshot is 9 pellets of .33 caliber and about 54 grains each that travel around 1300 fps.

I have just learned about the 12 gauge tri-ball. It is supposedly 3 hard cast pellets of .60 caliber and about 315 grains each that travel around 1150 fps.

With that kind of power, wouldn't the tri-ball be a much better self defense round then the 00 buck?

For indoors, I would suggest #4 Buckshot. It won't penetrate walls as well as 00 will, but is still proven to be lethal. Over the years I have seen many tactical studies and the results are pretty consistantly that birdshot will not reliably stop a human. One of the studies found that birdshot will not reliably penetrate a leather jacket at 8 yards. The pellets are way to small to carry enough energy to incapacitate a would-be assailant. Just look at the guy Dick Cheney shot in the face! For reliable knockdown power, I would go with #4 Buckshot as a minimum.

As to the triball, I would worry that any pellet that misses would do a lot of damage as it pounds it's way through the walls of your house and possibly kills an innocent bystander. A pellet that big will carry a lot of energy, so it will take a lot to stop it. Besides, Buckshot has been proven for years and is probably a lot cheaper because it isn't a specialty round. I personally like to go with what has stood the test of time, and that's buckshot.

Right now next to my bed I have an older Mossberg 500 loaded with Winchester Super X 3" 00 Buckshot, which contains 15 pellets. I, however, live in a brick house so I don't have to worry as much about stray pellets getting out. There are windows, but there is a lot more wall space than window space. I hope this helps.
