Self Defense Workshops

What should I learn this summer?

I'm a very busy person, I love doing things.
I am going to college in the fall and I would like to learn things in the summer, such as workshops, etc.
I was going to do some classes to lessen my schedule in college, but the one I'm going to doesn't take credits from my community college.
But oh well.

I just need some ideas of what to learn. CPR maybe...I might even try self defense class. I dunno. Just give me some ideas. :]

CPR and First Aid is always a good idea, one of those things that everyone should learn, and it is also for your résumé.

If you want to learn useful stuff, I would highly recommend learning how to cook and do basic sewing if you can't already, even if it's learned from a parent, especially as you are going away to college soon. Also, if you're looking for work, taking a FoodSafe or Serving it Right course wouldn't be a bad idea.

As to fun stuff, are you into performing arts at all? If so I would highly recommend a salsa dance course...it's a lot of fun and very social...or maybe a course in beginners' photography? Or, if you're more into althletics, then you could try yoga, pilates, tennis, maybe even some lifeguarding courses if you like to swim (it could also eventually get you a job as a lifeguard, to pay your way through college?)?

I hope this helps! good luck and have a fantastic summer!

Ideas for high school feminist club?

Hey everyone! :) So, I'm co-pres of my school's feminist club and I'm trying to think up some good ideas for events we could have. Currently we're thinking of having a self-defense workshop (open to everyone but marketed towards female seniors), a body-image discussion, and a presentation on this history of birth control. What are some other things we could do?

(In b4 bra-burning, anti-male protests, etc)
Doodle-- While that is an important issue, this is an American high school and unfortunately most people have a provincial mindset. We tried a discussion on rape laws in Afghanistan last year and it didn't go very far.

And I'm a little insulted by your attitude. You know a little bit about my opinions from my posts-- while my focus is not men's rights, I do consider them, and I'm not anti-male, either (except to the degree that every member of society is).
Eoghan, my co-president is 110 lbs, the whale! :o
Untamed, I really like that idea! Thanks!

Congratulations on being president of your school's feminist club.

I'm not sure, when you talk about events, if you mean club events or school-wide. But certainly one good choice might be what feminism is doing in third-world and muslim countries.

Women and politics - what attitude problems are we facing? Why has the US never had a female President? You could possibly ask a state senator or congresswoman to speak to your group. They love that sort of thing.

Take your cue from here. Research some of the strident voices criticizing feminism (Camille Paglia and some of the others so often quoted by our beloved boneheads) and discuss them. Ask your school library to order "Save the Males" by Kathleen Parker and discuss it.

Contact your local chapter of NOW and ask them to send you a speaker. What's new, what needs to be changed, how is feminist activism defined in the 21st century?

Gender images in the media. Which shows, which characters, which commercials promote stereotypes and which don't. There's a zillion ways you can go with this one.

You can expand on your history of birth control idea by including how feminism has affected mainstream medicine. Perhaps the school nurse can come in and speak to you. (I'm big on speakers.)

Good luck. I think your club year will be very successful with you at the helm.
