Self Defense Workout

Would you suggest Hapkido or Tae Kwon Do?

I'm an adult who wants to learn martial arts, and have found a place with lunch time classes for adults They teach Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do.

Which do you think is the best fit for me?

I want to learn real-world self defense, and get a good workout. A second (but not important) requirement is I like the belt ranks, but if the style didn't have that it's not an end all.

Let me know your thoughts . . . What the heck is the difference between these two styles?

TKD is first and foremost a striking art. And I want to say atleast 65% of that is going to be kicking. By taking it you will become very proficient in a wide variety of kicks and punches. A good friend of mine who trains Tang soo do ( a sister art to tkd) who is working on his 3rd degree has become a tremendous athelete due to his constant training in the art. I do know that at his school the small amount of grappling and throws they do learn come much later on in their training.

Hapkido while they do train kicks and punches do not make that thier primary focus. It's classified as a hybrid art meaning that you learn grappling, throws, take downs, strikes... etc. Not only will you learn how to throw, but how to protect yourself when you are thrown. A lot of the grappling self defense things you learn in tkd at later belts you will learn with in the first couple belts in Hapkido.

You gotta ask yourself if it's sport you want or self defense. I've got nothing against Tkd, and i will admit they throw strikes way better then the majority of Hapkido students, due to that being the focus of the art. But you will learn a much wider variety of techniques taking hapkido. Becoming a jack of all trades was my goal when i set out on my journey training. You need to decide what your goal is. I choose Hapkido, and dont regret the decision, even when I spar that buddy of mine. and we are going strikes vs strikes.

All that being said, if the teacher at the hapkido school is a moron and the one at the tkd school is excellent, then obviously go with the better teacher. Drop me an email if you want any more specific info, there's a link to it in my profile. If I dont know the answer I've got a pretty good support system on here, I can forward you to an appropriate person. Good luck man. Let us know how it works out.

back pain..should i workout still?

i may have kyphosis or something like that..but its not confirmed yet,im wondering if i can still go to my self defense class tonight without making my back worse, with the random jerks and twists i will be doing.

It's probably not a good idea until you know what you actually have and know how to deal with it such as physical therapy, proper posture, etc. Bending and twisting could cause severe pain and mess up something in your back when its already not in great condition
