Self Defense Weapons Women

carrying mace?

This doesn't have that much to do with martial arts, but it's about self-defense, so I posted it in this section.

Just curious to know your opinions...do you think it's smart to carry mace? Why/why not? Are there any tools/weapons you think people should carry for self-defense (especially women)?

Another topic that recently came up in a coversation... when you have a "bad feeling" about someone walking behind you, should you look them in the eye and/or talk to them or not?

I would not suggest eye contact or talking to them because many could see this as an open invitation to approach you. You should try to stay with people you feel comfortable with, or if you see someone you feel you could talk to, stop and ask them the time, or maybe directions. Your interaction with another person may be enough for the stranger to step away. Only speak directly to them if you are in a very open and public space. Again, don't open an invitation to them when you don't know what they will perceive as an excuse to get closer.

I do carry mace, but it is important to remember that if a person is high enough on drugs, their sensitivity to pain is dulled. In a bank robbery (and I worked for this bank so this is not a rumor) we had a guy hold up the bank.. someone got outside and called some construction workers to call for help. A few came in with wrrenches or even a steel pipe. They whacked this guy pretty hard and often, but he was so high on crack that he kept getting up. Please remember this before you assume the mace will keep you safe at all times.

I wish I was kidding about this, but they showed the security videos in training to show us how serious a hold up could be and just how much damage a person can take and keep going.

Talk to a security official or police officer about what is deemed the safest reaction. Often just making eye contact in a hostile stare will convey the message "I know you are there, now I know what you look like, and I'm not happy you are following me". It can also convey an Alpha Dog meaning. Staring someone down. But only use this in a comfortable/uncomfortable situation (if that makes sense).

gun defense question?

So...i'm trying to get a concealed weapons permit--purely for self defense because I'm a smokin' hot woman (lol). I was wondering, for the state of utah, what constitutes "self defense"? Yes, I know I can shoot at someone trying to kill me or rape me and get away with it...but what about someone trying to steal my purse? or my car? What are the limits of "self-defense"?

You can only use deadly force when you fear you are in imminent danger of death or great bodily injury, and that fear is reasonable.

Rape would definitely fall under great bodily injury. However, you can not use deadly force to protect property.

Utah has a "stand your ground" clause in its castle law, so it is much easier to justify shooting an intruder in your home. Outside the home is more difficult.

Here is Utah's law on self defense:
