When considering getting a firearm for self-defense, the first decision will be the type of firearm. Consider a handgun, a rifle or a shotgun. For most self-defense situations, a rifle is not the weapon of choice since it is generally too long and too bulky to use in close quarters. While a handgun and a shotgun can both function well as self-defense weapons, the shotgun is generally the more popular choice for a variety of reasons.

First of all, shotguns are usually more affordable than handguns of comparable quality. They are also generally more available than most handguns and are also legal for the civilian market in more states than handguns. Shotguns are commonly not as heavily regulated as handguns are. With the combination of affordability and availability, more people are apt to go for a shotgun rather than a handgun for a self-defense firearm.

Another reason why shotguns are preferred for self-defense is that handguns are usually inherently underpowered. Though handguns have the advantage of portability and are more easily concealed, shotguns are far more powerful. Shotguns are also perceived as more intimidating. For a self-defense weapon, this is very valuable, if we consider that the threat of being shot is usually enough to stop a crime in progress.

Because of the spread of the shot, the average shooter can engage multiple targets faster with a shotgun than with a handgun. However, given that self-defense situations usually happen in close quarters, the spread of a shotgun’s shot isn’t likely to expand by more than a few centimeters. This still holds an advantage in taking down an assailant since the shot will still spread further after hitting the target. This causes more damage which lends more stopping power. A spread shot that is fired in close range is also more likely to result in a disabling wound than a shot fired from a rifle or a pistol.

A shotgun is also safer to use in a populated structure like a house or an apartment since it won’t penetrate the wall as readily as a round from a handgun or a rifle. This makes it less likely for a shot to go through the walls and hurt innocent bystanders or neighbors.

Before purchasing a shotgun, you should be aware that shotguns are generally heavier and larger and aren’t as easy to maneuver as a handgun in close quarters. That being said, shotguns are considered to be excellent for close range use and continue to grow more popular as a self-defense firearm.

Should gun rights be limited?

Should they be limited? I understand the need for hunting rifles and the like. But today i saw a 50 caliber handgun for sale, the intended purpose obviously is not for hunting, as that would obliterate anything you shot it with, thus ruining a lot of good meat(which is the whole point of hunting right?) That gun has one purpose, and that is to kill another human being. Why are guns like this allowed to be on the free market? Where will someone draw the line? Assault rifles, sniper rifles, machine guns, and high powered hand guns have no practical use as hunting rifles, and many are illegal to take into the woods. Furthermore, these guns are impractical if not dangerous to keep as a means of self defense. I understand a persons right to keep and bear arms, i am very aware of the second amendment, and do not have any qualms with owning and using practical firearms. I am though VERY much against the right to own and use weapons of war.

You seem to have limited knowledge about firearms and our laws regarding them. I will try to help explain...

First of all a .50 caliber is only .05 larger than the commonly used .45 caliber handguns, which is about sufficient for self-defense. People buy handguns for self-defense and target shooting. They can be used for hunting, but it is rare. The 50 caliber Smith & Wesson 500 is actually an ideal handgun for hunting. You have to think an arrow would put a larger hole in a deer than that. Many states ban smaller calibers for hunting because they will wound the animal and make it suffer, whereas a larger caliber will take down game with a single shot.

Hunting is not the main reason people own firearms though. The second amendment doesn't say anything about hunting in it. Have you ever read it? The whole purpose of the second amendment is so that we can own weapons of war. Thomas Jefferson said, "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

People are buying handguns and other defensive weapons in record numbers. The crime and murder rates continues to go down. The reality of it is that these weapons serve to protect people and deter criminals. It is completely illogical to even contemplate banning them as this would mean only criminals would have them while the innocent would be stripped defenseless.

The "sniper rifles" you saw are hunting rifles. Any rifle with a scope on it could be used for either purpose. Full auto machine guns and assault rifles are only available to the rich and elite. You probably saw semi-automatic versions of the same guns which can only fire a single shot per trigger pull. There are clones such as the WASR-10 that look identical to an AK-47 assault rifle, but can only fire a single shot at a time making them no different than any other hunting or sporting rifle.

Hopefully this clears up many of your misconceptions about firearms. If you have any more questions or comments feel free to e-mail me.
