(:

You have to totally drop the idea of learning much self-defense from videos or the internet. Yes, there are tips and moves out there that are effective, but, they work best with people who already have some experience in a martial art(s). So, you being totally new to martial arts (you didn't mention any type of training so I'm assuming you don't) it won't help too much.

So, you do need to look for martial art schools in your area. If a fight does happen you want to be prepared.

What martial arts should you begin with? I wouldn't recommend just doing any type of martial art. For a total beginner like you who wants realisitc self-defense I would recommend only certain ones. The other martial arts just probably won't help you much. Martial arts are not all equal to one another for preparing someone to fight.

My recommendations:

STRIKING (martial arts that are mainly about punching, kicking, hitting, while standing up to stop or KO their opponet): Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Kyokushin Karate, Shotokan Karate, International Tae Kwon Do Federation (ITF) or World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF) Tae Kwon Do, Savate, San Shou, Kung Fu, Kenpo

GRAPPLING (martial arts that are mainly about grabbing your opponet, taking them down to the ground, then either choking them unconcious/striking them on the ground/breaking a limb (not recommeded unless a super emergency!)/putting them in a pin): Judo, Brazillian JiuJitsu, Sambo, Submission Wrestling

STRIKING AND GRAPPLING (martial arts that train you to fight both standing up with strikes and grappling on the ground equally): Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) cagefighting, Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do, Japanese Jujitsu.

A lot of those styles should help prepare you to better handle a fight. They have good techniques that are effective. Any other martial art I wouldn't recommend.

The, both striking and grappling arts are what you want most. They combine both general areas of a fight and can prepare you for either area. Krav Maga is a good one if you have it in your area.

The others would be based on your preference. If you feel you can hit someone with strikes and beat them that way the best take a striking art. If you rather wrestle them to the ground and finish it there, then take a grappling art.

A martial art class will help you develop confidence about a possible fight. You are preapring yourself each time you go to class. You are doing something about the problem. Martial arts won't make you invulnerable and you can still get beat up, yes, but, they will help. Don't get all cocky and think you can beat this girl up with a little martial arts training. You don't want to start a fight! You just want to defend yourself! Defending yourself is more like moving out of the way if she pushes you, not even being there for here to do it to you, blocks, things like that. You defend yourself with the level she gives you (a push doesn't deserve a punch to the face. if she tries to punch you in the face then, yes, then it's time to punch her in the face. a shove deserves to be ignored it's not something that injures you normally just a threat or insult mainly. Focus on self-defense not getting into a full-out fistfight with her (her being a senior means she is probably a serious, tough threat). The main defense is really to avoid her if possible. I wouldn't give her much reaction either is she pushes you or insults you. Bullys love entertainment! If you mouth off, look hurt or mad, they love that entertainment and want more! They love the entertainment of pushing you too! So, it's best not to be around to be her favorite pushing target! This is self-defense I am telling you not fighting.

So, look up some martial art schools, visit them, find one you like, and start training! It's the best advice someone can give you!

Are there some styles of Karate that use the toes as the strike point for some kicks?

I saw a self defense video yesterday where a self-defense instructor round kicked a guy in the adam's apple and it looked like she was using her toe to kick with. Has anyone heard of this technique?

As others have said..

Okinawan karate and savate.

Best wishes :) ***

I really like to know some self-defense. But I don't have enough time to practice. What type of self-defense do you think that can easy to be learned?

    • I made a seperate post by accident but meant to reply to you. See the post before this reply. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sounds like it would be the right martial art for you. I know you said you are low on time but getting in to practice here and there is important to get the "feel" of the sport. For now, we post free videos each month at http://www.strongheartacdaemy.com to give you some information to look at for the time being while your strapped for time.

  • Womens self defense and bullying prevention are two subjects I feel strongly about. I am a student at a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school in Phoenix called Strong Heart Academy. Each month we post new videos for free at http://www.strongheartacdaemy.com to introduce what BJJ is.

I hope some of you will check the videos out and maybe visit your local BJJ school. As a person who posted earlier wrote, it is important you get to practice live with other people. BJJ is a sport where a weaker person can beat a stronger person on the ground with leverage and technique. Unfortunately, you really need that practice to be able to use it effectively. I've been competing for over 5 years and the people in the BJJ community are great people so don't be intimidated. Good luck ladies and I hope this helps someone out there. Take care!
