What forms of self-defense protection are women allowed to carry with them in London?

Hi there,

I just read that it is illegal to carry self protection sprays or knives here in the UK. As a petite female who is moving to London I want to know how I am expected to protect myself if I am not even allowed to carry some pepper spray or mace!

First weapon is your brain. Be aware of your environment and do not hesitant to do something inconvenient (wait for coworkers to leave with you, take longer route home) if it is safer.

A weapon is an equalizer but it is not a magic wand. You must know how to use it properly for it to be of any help.

Since you are in London, your best bet is an "improvised weapon." Pens made of metal make excellent kubotans and stabbing implements. A little old lady in NY turned a robber's face into swiss cheese with her ballpoint. A cane may be a good choice if you can pull off the look. Sometimes rustic looking sticks meant for hiking are easier to excuse for younger folks. Hickory, ash and oak are woods to look for. If a cane does not suit you, a rigid shafted umbrella may. Umbrellas can be used to "punch" and opening them often makes you difficult to get at for a moment even if the attacker has a knife. Belt's make good flails but they require some skill or talent to use. If you have naturally good hand-eye coordination and pick flies out of the air with a rolled up tea-towel, that might be an option for you.

I've always been appalled at the UK's stance on self-defense and weapons used. Funny thing is when you measure violent crime per-capita and control for population density, crime is about the same in the US (which allows guns in most states to be carried) and the UK.

Is it legal to kill someone out of self-defense in the UK?

i.e. Somebody breaks in your house and tries to hurt you or your family.
