Would aikido or judo be a better choice for self defense?

Aikido has some good things. It is less abusive on the body for one thing. But would someone be able to use it effectively at all within a reasonable amount of time (1 to 2 yrs. of training)? I'm talking about self defense not fighting it out with someone. Just protecting myself with what aikido has and not getting all tough guy Steven Segal on someone.
Judo is good but very abusive on the body. It has a lot of good self defense tools. But is it worth putting my body through that abuse? Can I achieve self defense through aikido without all the ultra competiveness and abuse Judo can bring to a practioner? Yes, if I took Judo I would feel the need to do it all sparring and competition.
Any advice out there? I personally like aikido a bit better than judo but I want to have competent self defense skills too. I don't want to do something that just gives me a false sense of security and fails against an attacker.

Traditional Aikido can be just as abusive on the body too you know. I've had classmates with broken collarbones, dislocated elbows and sprained knees from rough housing during randori, so you can't really attribute it to just Judo or any art for that matter. A good instructor usually makes sure that your training is safe and do not lead to injury. That being said, regarding what both arts offer, Aikido offers more than just physical techniques, it also offers a mindset that is inherently different from most martial arts in that it advocates avoidance of head on conflicts. This leads you to be more aware of any potential danger and take steps to avoid falling into them. Judo on the other hand offers a variety of techniques that cover a wider range of scenarios compared to Aikido. Whereas Aikido puts more emphasis on avoidance and escape and therefore doesn't encourage one to duke it out and finish an attacker off, but merely to control and restrain, then retreat at the first possible instant, Judo on the other hand, can also be used aggressively to engage, throw and then finish off an opponent, even on the ground if needed. In the end, it all depends on your personal preference. A good instructor in both can more than make up for whatever lack there is in the art compared to the other. As for your fears of having a false sense of security and failing against an attacker, the same can be said of all empty hand martial arts. Can you really be 100% sure that other more aggressive arts like Muay Thai for example won't fail against a determined attacker?

What is the legal issues with brass knuckles in New york?

I looked at various sites, but i still do not know the consequences of carrying one and/ or keeping it as a self defense tool. What is the consequences?
Situation: 14 year old (friend of mine) got caught in possession of one by his school. Good student, high grades, your usual goody-goody. What is the worst/ minimum thing that can happen to him at his hearing?

Brass knuckles are considered a deadly weapon in the United States and many schools have zero tolerance weapons policy's so ether suspension or expulsion.

Why was he carrying them just to do it ? or was someone or a group of kids bullying him because if this is the case and he was in fear for his personal being then he will get much less of a punishment.
