Need advice on purchasing a tool for self defense.?

I have a lot of experience in Aikido (7 yrs), but I've really just been pursuing it casually. Recently, a friend of mine got mugged and I'm beginning to see the merits of carrying some kind of weapon for self defense. I've narrowed it down to choosing between an ASP expandable baton and a folding knife. I know what I think, but I wanted to throw it out here to see what everyone else thought.

Please, leave this to people who know their stuff. Watching UFC all the time doesn't make you an expert.

Brass Knuckles are illegal to carry in almost every state, and so are collapsable batons...check your state laws.

Most states have laws on the size and type of knives you can carry..where I live the cutting surface cannot be more then 3 inches long, no butterfly knives, switchblades or double edged daggers. Also certian things like neck knives are cinsidered concealed weapons....

The only viable options are vbasicly a kuboton, which your instructor should be able to teach you to use, and a smaller one handed opening knife, also which yiou will have to train with...noe for the bad news..

If somebody id intent on robbing you they are probably going to have a weapon..most generally a knife or gun...and we know whta happens when you bring a knife to a gun fight. I myself carry a compact 9mm legally, since I want all options covered...I have trained karate for 19 years and this is what I normally carry:

1) Kuboton

2) Surefire flashlight- Greta for blinding people and can be used like a kuboton

3) Assited opening bencmark tanto point folder

4) Smith and Wesson M%P Compact 9mm

This gives me lots of options and different levels that I can use to respond to threats

My advice get a concealed carry permit, geta gun, and get training inclduing some type of self defense shooting classes. train until the gun is an extension of you.

UK , Canada, Austrailia ...The legal citizens are not allowed self-defense tools. Whats up with that?
