Self Defense Teacher
If I'm a teacher and a student attacks me, can I hit him back in self defense?
I'm a black-belt and the student has a sharpened metal ruler. (Hypothetical)
No, you wouldn't be able to HIT him, however self defense can also involve blocking, parrying and dodging and arm locks. Basically, you have to use the most minimum force necessary to disarm the student and so he wouldn't hit you again. Say he striked you with a diagonal slash with the ruler you could easily block him and hold him until he gives up. If he's persistent, you may arm lock him to make him uncomfortable or get him in a nice headlock that isn't too painful.

Self Defense Teacher
self-taught self-defense: any ideas?
myself and a small group of friends were wondering if anyone knew a good site or one of those video sets that we could use to learn self defense w/o a teacher. have any of you run across any good ones? nothing too expensive please... -_-'
That is a waste of time and money. You need an instructor to guide you and correct your mistake before they become habits that you alone will never break. If the day comes that you will need to use your training you will not be prepared.
In martial arts thing that are do not appear as though they are. In other words many techniques appear to be one thing but in fact it is something totally different.
