laws differ from state to state, but in most, you still need a concealed weapons permit to carry a taser.

Any non-lethal self defense weapons I can get that won't get me in trouble with the police?
I originally wanted to buy the Avurt IM-5 PAVA launcher, but no longer for sale. It fired little balls of mace and looked NOTHING like a gun which I thought was great cuz i wouldnt get stopped by police and have them thinking im a bad guy.
Mind you, I need something cuz I got mugged by 8 ppl a couple months ago. Dont tell me self defense cuz im not Steven Segal who can seemlessly take on more than 3 ppl. I'm not all for knives and tasers and such cuz they require you to be close to the subject.
I need something that can fire from a distance, looks nothing like a gun (and by that I mean it doesnt have a trigger finger or anything that looks like a clip chamber)... UNLESS is there a way I can have any of those gun-looking or toy gun-looking non lethal weapons WITHOUT getting in trouble with the cops?
Mind you, I live in NYC.
