How long does it take to lean actual self-defense from Kung fu?

I just started a kung fu class, and I like it.
But i'm kind of stuck learning forms. Don't get me wrong, I understand the importance of forms.
It is a very good school, the teacher has a lot of experience and is well overqualified.
I know its going to take a little bit to learn but how long into it does it usually take to learn some actual self defense.
The school is fut gar.

Fut Gar is a great style. If you have a good instructor who is obliging, you can learn actual self-defense immediately. However, in most schools, you will have to master the basics last such as the iron palm which is usually reserved for advanced levels.

Unfortunately, without the basics such as the iron palm, many kung fu hand movements lose their meaning. A real kung fu master will easily break the arms of a western boxer or peel the face of a wrestler with the leopard fist.

I got jumped fought back in self defense?

I was walking home from work one night,
When three guys came out of nowhere and started to push me around. But I didn't do anything.
And ran away.
Then a few weeks later. They came at me again, this time I knew I had to defend myself.
When one of them approached me, My danger instincts kicked in, And since I had taken several krav maga for self defense I knew what to do in the situation. I grabbed his arm before he pushed me and twisted it and I heard a snap and kneed his face.
And the other guy ran towards me. I stuck my finger right in his eye socket, and struck his jaw hard with my palm.
And ran away.

get an attorney .. if you have a witness your ok for sure.
if its self defence, the truth will come out in court. push for a jury trial.if its 3 against one the jury will take your side. IF YOU YOUR TELLING THE TRUTH,

if you win they will have to pay your legal fees..
