Self defense class and pepper spray?
I recently had my purse stolen in the street and was nearly assaulted in LA, I was wondering if it would be a good precaution to take a self defense class and get a can of pepper spray. And if so what is the best most discreet kind to hide in your purse or key chain, and what si the difference between pepper spray and mace. And when is it ok to use it (please use examples) thank you
oh are tazers/stun guns more effective then pepper spray
oh I am only 22 by the way and live in an all girl dorm, that is also why I am afraid for my safety.
Self Defense classes and pepper spray are both good strategies. The class will give you practical advice on how to stay out of trouble, give you confidence, and give you close-range fighting options. Pepper Spray gives you long range fighting options coupled with low-level force options. One should always be prepared for both short and long range.
One thing to consider about pepper spray (this ties in with your question about when you can use it) is that it will never kill or permanently injure. If you have a good understanding of this, you will hesitate less to use it when you need to. Some people armed with guns will "flinch" when facing an attacker they are not sure if they should use deadly force on (Both the hesitation to kill a human being, and the legal liability afterward). Pepper Spray avoids this.
"Mace" is a brand name now, and not a spray type, BUT in the 80s it used to refer to a spray formula containing a riot agent called Phenacyl chloride. This chemical is no longer used because it has various problems, including being toxic in some cases. Modern day pepper spray uses a chemical Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), the compound in peppers that makes them taste hot. Some products marked "Mace" nowadays actually contain OC and are exactly the same as other pepper sprays.
ASP, Fox and Sabre are great brands for pepper spray, and have many types of dispenser that may suit you. Get one with a cone spray pattern though. http://www.copsplus.com/personalpepperspray.php
Now for use of force, you can use pepper spray on someone when you have a reasonable belief they are going to attempt to harm you. You do not have to let them hit you first. For example if you leave the back door of a job and there is a guy waiting outside who leers at you, makes lewd comments and starts walking towards you, you can and should give him a face full, then get out of there. Pepper spray takes a few seconds to start affecting someone, so you need to use it sooner than later. A circumstance were you should not be spraying someone is because they make you angry or they are insulting you. It should only be used when their is a threat to your person. In many states (I don't know about CA) you are also usually entitled to defense of your property. For example if someone breaks into your house, you don't need to know WHY they are breaking in (steal things v. kill you), breaking in is enough to warrant spraying them. Similarly, it is usually justified if a purse snatcher has grabbed your bag but you still have the other end and are struggling with them, you can spray them to get them to give up (many courts consider the snatcher to be assaulting you if he is playing tug of war with a bag).
Regarding electrical weapons, I seriously dislike them even though they are legal where I live. Stun guns (The kind you have to touch someone with) are useless and all they do is hurt. Sometimes this just makes the other person let go, or it just pisses them off. Plus you have to get really close to shock someone. The Taser (The gun that shoots the probes) is also not all that great. They cost $300-700, require you to register your personal information, and you get one shot. Both probes have to hit the target or it's useless. And when the attacker is coming for you, it can be hard to aim. You may notice that when cops use them, their shooting the suspect in the back most of the time, not facing the suspect from the front with the suspect coming at them. Just my 2 cents on that.
