Self Defense Shootings
Do people really believe that guns are the best way to protect their family?
I've heard the argument that since criminals will have guns "no matter what" private citizens need guns to protect their families. Studies and statistics show that a gun in the house is much more likely to kill a friend or family member than to be used on an intruder. So what is it that makes them so appealing?
Don't more guns equal more shooting? Pointing a gun at a criminal seems like it would make them more likely to react violently, if only in self-defense. Easy accessability means that there are more casual criminals and spontaneous shootings.
Personally I'm not as worried about hardened criminals as I am about being shot by someone who wields a gun like a toy. It's a highly efficient instrument of death that because of our current laws can be picked up by any disgruntled high school outcast or paranoid trigger-happy neurotic. Aren't there other ways to keep your family safe? Are they really that unsafe to begin with? Maybe I just haven't lived in a bad enough neighborhood.
A gun is the best way to protect your family: IF you have a brain. That means you need to have a trigger lock or a gun safe and keep the safeties on and educate yourself and your family about gun safety and keep the gun out of children's reach and not let them know the combination to the safe or know where the trigger lock key is. Also you shouldn't leave ammunition lying around, it is just as dangerous as a gun. The problem is that too many adults are too stupid to handle owning a gun. I may sound cold hearted but in that case I hope that they don't get to reproduce and that their kids do shoot each other. Less idiots is a better world for me. The cops can take forever to get to your house anyway. I personally own guns not necessarily because I think I'll get in a shootout with criminals desperate for my pocket change or whatever is in my house, but because target shooting with guns can be a fun hobby if practiced safely at a range. People break their necks in football, a meteor can fall on you when you leave your house, there is risk in everything, but I still to live life in an enjoyable way.(and remember SAFE you idiots! SAFE!)

What do you as an American citizen think of private gun ownership in the USA?
Where I live in England the only gun's you can own are two shot shotguns and single shot rifles as events like the Hungerford and Dunblane massacres made private firearm ownership for self defense illegal. But what do you think about private gun ownership in the USA after events like the Columbine and Virginia tech shootings?
Thanks
The right to bear arms is a guarantee granted to U.S citizens (with a few exceptions) by our Constitution. As "itsjunglepat" stated, there will be an occasional case of misuse, and in some states the types of firearms allowed will vary.
In that perfect Utopia where every one obeyed every law gun control would work. However those who commit crimes will use guns. In an emergency situation it would the the police about 5 minutes to get to my home. It just makes me feel safer knowing that I have the ability to protect my self and my family during that time.
I own several guns including several hand guns. I keep them locked in a gun safe, with trigger locks on them as required by the state I live in. I only shoot them at approved gun ranges, and they are only used for target practice. No one need fear me or my guns (except anyone that tries to break into my home) , and that is the same for the vast majority of American gun owners.
You must agree that even in the U.K. with its strict gun laws, the criminal element has a way of getting guns.
