Self Defense Products For Women

How could this product be better?

I am talking about mace or pepper spray. I am designing a new adaptation of this product. My target audience and market are college girls. There have been issues related to physical or sexual assault on certain college campuses since one can remember. The task at hand is to create a self defense item that would be practical when young women go for a stroll or a jog.

What would make it more effective against an assailant? Is portability, grip or firing method an issue or concern? What about the safety pin or mode of operation? Would you, as a user and consumer, prefer to use you index finger or your thumb to deploy the contents? It should be very comfortable to operate. What can you say of materials and color options?

Only serious answers please. We are all mature people here. Thank you!

I would never rely on some spray thing to protect me.

What is the best Self Defense product out there?

Today my mother almost got mugged in a gym parking lot. She was followed out of a store by some guy but she got in her car and locked the doors just in time because he tried to open them! I went out looking for the guy with a 7" kitchen knife in my pocket (if your mom came home crying you would do the same) and I literally would have killed him but I had no luck finding him. My mother goes out for several hours every day and I was wondering what the best self defense product is for a woman like her (taser, pepper spray etc...)
Is it legal to carry a loaded gun in a purse in San Diego?
Any info on tasers?

The best thing for self defense, especially in her case, is awareness.
If she is aware of her surroundings, and who is around her, that is half the battle. If she is uncomfortable or feels suspicious of something, she doesn't have to go to her car until there are people around.

Remember that any weapon can be taken off of you and used against you.

Local gyms, dojo's, and YWCA's may provide women's self defense courses.

Awareness, however, is golden.
