What MMA is best for self defense if you are 5'9 and about 180lbs?

I'm a 5'9 (178cm)and 150lbs (68kg) sprinter, but i want to learn how to fight. Plus I'm focused on putting on 30lbs of muscle during the next few months (years rather). My mate showed me krav maga videos and I think it's a sort of thing I'm looking for BUT there aren't any KM schools in my city (Peterborough, UK). there is one in Cambridge and loads in london but that's too far to travel and takes too much time, and i have loads of other stuff goin on.
Are there any alternatives in or near P'boro then? or if not, does anybody know any good self help books or websites? I'm a quick and self learner so at least i would teach myself something (anything :p)

Some defense practices are:

<> Punch for 30 seconds the air in front of you with your eyes closed.
<> move your hands around an a horizontal 8 position with eyes closed
<> Do stretches with arms for 30 minutes a day
<> Watch the karate kid. Those moves are real and helpful.

What self defense weapon are available in UK?

I'm going to London for the third time. I'm planing to stay a bit longer this time and work there. What sort of legal self defense weapons can I carry in the UK ; (Besides the "personal loud alarm" and "the colored foam spray that stains the assailants t-shirt", I mean that stuff is just ridiculous). I know some Krav-Maga, but it's not really enough. I come from Romania, and I'm used to carry at least a nunchack and two pepper sprays. I was mugged the first time I went to London and my peace of mind was ruined. Any information would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Boxing, Kick-Boxing and many other Martial Arts training. There are a great deal of improvised weaponry available for free, laying around, just in case a filthy blaggard does jump one.
