self defense?

ok, i got in a fight at school which only happened because the other kid started it. it started with me and this other kid foolign around and this other kid interrupts as he doesn't like me in the first place and we get into a fight and i get detention for a week cuz of it. it was self defense and the principal says that as long as i was involved, i get in trouble too. how is this fair?
what was i supposed to do?walk away? then the rumors would spread that i wussed out and my life becomes a hell. since i fought him, i get in trouble.... its a lose lose.

Real world? If you're talking about getting into a fight with another employee at your job generally BOTH people get fired. Don't matter who started it unless he's related to the boss. If the pompous wimp is related to management then you put up with it.

If you're talking about a fight in a bar or some other place if you're forced to defend yourself and kick someone's butt and have witness saying so, nothing will happen.

There are also times when two people get into a fight, the fight gets broken up, the cops come and BOTH of you get hauled to jail. Then you and the dude you were fighting with are charged with brawling or disturbing the peace.
