Self Defense Instructor
Self Defense?
I am a self defense instructor for the agency that I work for. I have been asked to teach self defense to a local sorority. Should I teach them some of lethal blows I instruct with my fellow deputies, or keep it pretty basic. They have had a stalker in the area lately.
I have already decided to include pressure points, the brachial plexus spots and the psychology of self defense. I am just curious. This is one of my first classes that is not full of certified peace officers and military personel.
In referense to "Dave" -
We need self defense as law enforcement officers, becasue sometimes all we can rely on is hand to hand defense. There are times that we are critisized for using our weapon. If someone attacks us or goes for our weapon, we have the right to use any force necessary to get full control back. 87% of all officers shot in the line of duty are killed by their own weapon. Self defense as a deputy is as essential as our handcuffs.
This going to be an on going class or just a few classes and that's it? Either way you should start with simple, easy to execute moves that will quickly take an attacker down. Pressure points are a great place to start. Keep it simple, keep it realistic. Perhaps take a female officer with you to demonstrate the moves on you to kind of get it in their minds that a smaller female does indeed have a chance of executing these moves against a much bigger and stronger male.

How do I get a personal fighting/defense instructor?
I've always wanted to learn how to fight. Not because I like to fight, but because it will help me to feel more secure in my day-to-day rather then so helpless. I'm not talking self defense like what we see on tv and I'm not talking cage style fighting. I am a women and I want to fight like a women. I may not have a man's strength, but I am small, agile, and I could use my brain. The best example of this is in the movie 'Enough' with Jennifer Lopez. She has a personal trainer and learns how to fight, defend, and all by excepting that she is a women-- no drugs and bulky muscles. Where can I find a trainer like the one she had? Where can I even start to look? Remember, I'm not talking just self defense, I'm talking about fighting back.
I wasnt really looking at Martial Arts, but this is the closest catagory I could find to post this type of question. Thanks for your help everyone!
There are plenty of martial arts / fighting systems etc. If you want a personal trainer like Jennifer Lopez had in the movie, be prepared to pay. You may want to look to traditional jujitsu (not sport jujitsu), krav maga, fight, scars, spears, etc. There is nothing wrong with traditional okinawan karate etc, don't rule that out.
There are instructors that will personally train you if that is what you are looking for, however it is better to join a class so you have many different types of people to work with. It will also be cheaper in the long run than personal training.
Ask the instructors you talk to what kind of mental preparation are they going to teach you. Anyone can learn techniques and not be able to put them into practice because they do not have the survival, killer mind set. Not paranoia.
The physical approach is not always the best answer. In Karate Kid the greatest line I remember was "best block, no be there", Best situation is no be there. Use your head, figure it out ahead of time and avoid the situation if at all possible. Otherwise you better have the right mentality to fight without rules to save your life if it comes down to it.
There are plenty of people who know zero martial arts knowlege or skills that save their lives in dire situations because of their mental awareness, and mental attitude for survival no matter what.
Always be aware of your surroundings, learn and know the various scenarious the you can get in trouble with, do not put yourself in those scenarios, have a plan, make the plan dynamic so it can change with the situation, and develop the survival mentality.
You are in charge of your life. Don't let some stranger dictate to you when you are going to be safe of not.
They have no right.
You are worth defending!
