Self Defense In Schools

Why is self-defense outlawed in public schools?

I actually remember being told to run away if ever threatened. kids are always told they have to "get an adult" but are threatened with severe disciplinary action if one decided to fight back. Why is self-defense severely frowned upon in public schools?

First, school officials have no authority write laws. Consequently, it is impossible for them to "outlaw" something. They do have plenty of policies, and I understand that this is, effectively, what you mean.

Policy-wonks tell other people that they may not defend themselves because (1) they are stupid, (2) neither understand nor respect basic human rights such as the right to protect yourself, and (3) love to micromanage how others act and think.

1. They are stupid. In our area there is a campaign called "hands and words are not for hurting." They spend endless hours and millions of dollars telling kids -- making kids pledge -- to never use their hands or words to hurt someone else. Now, imagine that you are a Bad Guy. If you are going to bully or do violence to people, are you going to go to where the people have been taught and are encouraged to protect themselves, or are you going to seek out the sheeple who have been conditioned to never use force, even to protect themselves?

The latter, of course. And yet, the administrators persist in their efforts, efforts which have been shown in nearly every empirical study to INCREASE violence and crime against innocent people. Such people don't understand human nature at its most basic level. They believe they can change it with posters and slogans, but these acts are only effective on submissive, compliant people -- the victims.

2. They neither understand nor respect basic human rights. If you don't have the right to protect yourself from violence, then you don't have any rights, because it is the one that supports all the others. If you can't protect yourself from violence, coercion, theft, then you simply don't have a life -- you are a slave in mind and body.

Administrators don't recognize or admit this, but this is exactly what they want. They encourage "free" critical thinking, as long as the conclusions coincide with the administration's. It is a very rare teacher or administrator who actually respects and encourages his students' freedom.

3. Unfortunately, teaching has become more about telling people what to think and filling their heads with "facts," than about teaching them how to discover truth, discern error, and think critically.

Again, in most schools you can think, do and say whatever you want... as long as it doesn't challenge the status quo.

"Get an adult" morphs into "call the police" when you get older. It is just as ineffective there. Most assaults happen in a matter of seconds or minutes, and police don't prevent crimes. They just show up after the fact, take notes, and sometimes find and arrest the perpetrator. Sometimes they really screw things up, too, and arrest the victim.

If school administrators truly cared about their students' safety, they wouldn't be telling them to not defend themselves. They would teach them to defend themselves and would promote doing so.

Suggestions for Grappling Schools and Self Defense?

I've been looking for some suggestions for schools of grappling and self-defense. I've come to the conclusion that, for the most part, I generally just don't like hitting people. I won't claim to be a pacifist, but I typically finish things rather than start 'em!

I had a little training in Hapkido from an instructor of a different art before I moved to a different city. Now, I'm in Dallas and basically starting over. (My old Sensei didn't have any suggestions for this area.)

What other arts would you folks recommend for grappling, joint-locks, or other related submission holds? I'm less interested in striking, etc. Physically, I'm large, heavy, and like to lift weights. Knowing I'm stronger than most people might help explain my aversion to hitting people, lol. It makes me overcautious in training.

If you like wrestling, Brazilian Jujitsu is an abvious choice. Great for self defense and very little striking.

If you are more interested in the spiritual aspects of the martial arts, then Aikido is the ultimate pacifists art. Effective only after years of training, Aikido has no striking, and works in fluid, circular motions that render an opponent helpless, ideally without harming him.

So: jujitsu more realistic and easier to learn, Aikido more peaceful.

Aikido also teaches sword and staff techniuqes if you're into that.
