Which martial arts class would be the best for fitness?

Basically the topic question. I plan on taking a martial art to get me back into shape as well as teach self defense. Please don't say running. Not only is it irrelevant its also annoying. Thanks.

I agree with those that said pretty much any martial arts are good for fitness. I would suggest that you visit some schools and find out which one is the best for you.

Which self-defence discipline should I practise?

I'm interested in getting back into some kind of training for personal self-defense and fitness, after a break of about 5yrs. In the past, I trained in Kung fu in a commercial suburban gym, attending about 3x 1 hr classes per week.

I want to be able to diffuse, and protect myself in, confrontations. So I'd like to able to disarm attackers, be able to apply submission holds, deflect and defend against blows, ideally unarmed myself. I liked training with quarter-staff but honestly, don't want to rely on it.

Should I take up Kung fu again? Karate? BJJ? Something else?
Is any one of these better, or is it simply how hard you've worked/trained?

First Kung Fu and Karate for that matter are generic terms used to describe dozens of styles each.
Now that being said, choose between schools/ instructors, not styles. Quality instruction by a competent instructor is much more important than what the style happens to be.
Find out what is available within a reasonable distance visit each and choose between instructors based on the quality of the students.
Avoid schools with:
* Long term contracts (more than a year)
* Black belt or leadership " Clubs"
* Black belts under 16
* ANY / ALL ATA schools.
