Why do plot devices that seem plausible at the time seem absurd and embarrassing in retrospect?
I feel sometimes that no matter how scrupulously we plan as writers, it is impossible to avoid mistakes like these. I get that they need to happen in drafting; that's what revisions are for. Still, they come back to haunt me, I swear, on nights when I'm laying awake feeling untalented.
For instance, in a recent story, I had one character punch another relatively out-of-context. (It was a comedy-- but still.) All I can say in self-defense is, "It seemed like a good idea at the time!" Even after the offense is fixed in revision, it's oddly... excruciating to think that I could have misjudged so much.
Other writers, please commiserate (or argue, of course).
Well...it's a draft.
I don't beat myself up for playing wrong notes when I'm learning a piece on the piano, either.
In your case, I'd use that as a clue to myself that the character maybe _felt_ like he wanted to punch the other person, and when I rewrote, I'd consider what he'd actually have done.
