I had an incident with a mentally deranged person in a supermarket parking lot a little while ago. It really scared me. I mentioned it to a friend of mine who is a nurse, and she told that what I needed to do was buy a "bariatric cane." Before she could elaborate, she had to prepare to leave to fly off and visit her folks.
What is a "bariatric" cane?
Why would it be good for self defense?
Why would a nurse be familiar with such a device?

Bariatric canes are hollow so it's light enough for the elderly and feeble. It does not make a good weapon. Get a walking stick made of solid hard wood.

Anything you have in you hand can be used for self defense if you have the knowledge. There are martial arts school that teach the can as a self defense weapon. One that I have personally talked to gave me a wonderful demonstration on its use. They went on the explain why they use and teach the cane as a weapon. This was before most states allow citizens to have a CCW. Of course we know that traditional weapons are illegal to walk around carrying. However, if you have a cane that is not concealing another weapon it is assume that you have it to aid you in your walking. Just because you have it it doesn't give you the right to go around beating up people because you know how even if it were in self defense. You can defend yourself, but if you go too far according to the law you can be charged with assault or assault with a deadly weapon. Many will say that that they were just acting in self defense. But there is a point when it changes from self defense to assault. You may not know what that point is. But ignorance is no excuse to the law.
The nurse knows about the cane because it is a common cane issued to patients at hospitals. It is made out of a strong material.
