Martial arts... Can I do it?

I enjoy martial arts, and I want to start studying it to build self-esteem as well as defense skills. According to my BMI, I am no quite on the borderline of being overweight, but I am fairly close... Can I pull it off? I can't do all these crazy back flips and things, I just want to learn the basics and stay in shape.

The only thing that is standing in your way to do martial arts is yourself my friend. Crazy back-flips are all fancy show and is not pretty in a real life-situation. The strongest martial artists are always the most humble. Which is why I do not favor the UFC or MMA... it creates a generalization among the young people who act like cavemen.

Therefore; if you would like to learn ground basics and to stay in shape I would suggest American Kickboxing.

I would recommend Muay Thai; but most Muay Thai nowadays are commercialized and the schools up in the mainland sometimes teach a load of bull. Muay Thai can get pricey but it is as effective as any martial arts out there as long as the individual can apply it the right way. Of course Muay Thai is an art that must be respected by humbling yourself. Always. (Just like any other martial arts...)

Therefore you only need three things: modesty, adaptability, and willpower.

Call them the three keys and I can assure you, you will benefit from them.

-Cheers.

What are some tips for a beginner in self-defense?

I have asked an experienced black-belt to teach me self-defense basics. But I already feel so frustrated on my first day, because it seems I'm too much of a slow learner or I'm not cut out for this stuff. My teacher says I am too "reactive"...too quick to respond that I do the wrong moves. Also I lose my balance easily and it takes forever for me to focus (any techniques I should practice here?).

Almost everyone sees me as this girly-girl, which I'm really not or at least don't want to be. I'd want to be able to protect myself. So any tips would help guys, thanks in advance!
I've gone through preparations with strength training before learning self-defense. My main problems are balance, focus and timing.

Don't be frustrated, everybody starts the same way. After years of training i finally got my black belt, but honestly when i began i completely sucked. If you try your hardest and do what the instructors tell you to do, you'll do well. Give 100% and that's what you'll get out of it.
For balance using kicks and such are good. Learning what the different weight distribution of your body on your legs is helpful in being better at balance.
Focus on the opponents eyes. If he moves a part of his body be prepared to oppose that move. After a while you'll learn when he is faking or when to move. Don't move at every little thing he does, but be ready.
Timing comes with, well, time. Once you get used to the balance, you can focus on timing and distance, angle, and power.
I can't help you out with your being viewed as a "girly girl" but one thing that'll wipe that out fast is trying your very best at everything. Don't be afraid of what anybody thinks of you. Do your own personal best.
A little encouragement: a girl started at my school a few years ago and she.. well she was bad (as we all are). She always gave 100% though, and that won her the respect of the other students. Now she's pretty mean, she's a really good fighter.
