Which self-defense device is better for my mother, stun gun or pepper spray?
I love my mother dearly, but I'm always afraid when she takes her evening walks throughout the neighborhood. So I want to buy her a self-defense weapon, and it's either going to be a stun gun or pepper spray? Which is better for my mother to use? She isn't what I would call a class A- sprinter so I need the device that will give my mom enough time to escape incase she gets mugged by an armed robber. Will the stun gun or pepper spray be better for self-defense purposes allowing a slow person to escape safely with their lives? P.S. I also considered buying my mom one of those really loud personal alarms with the flash light built-in but I figured it would not deter an attacker from possibly killing my mother if they had a weapon.
Pepper Spray would cost from $8-$20 while stun guns cost from $25-$40
People who are providing answers are confusing a stun gun with a Taser branded device. A Taser is very expensive, fires two barbed projectiles attached to a thin wire, requires a lot of red tape for a civilian to go through to even activate the device and is not legal in a lot of cities & states. A stun gun fires no projectiles & is not a gun at all. It is a non-lethal personal protection device that has 2 metal prongs protruding from the top of the device and has a button on the side that activates the device. To work you must be in direct contact with your assailant (which leaves you very vulnerable) & it then delivers anywhere from a non-lethal 50,000 to 950,000 volt shock incapacitating the assailant for anywhere from 15-45 minutes.
Pepper spray may be a person's better choice in this situation. If it is legal to have in your city/state, get at minimum 5% OC, preferably 10-15% OC concentration. You may even consider getting a spray that has a marking agent so that it leaves a stain on the assailants clothing/skin for easy id of the assailant. But with any personal protection device, lethal or non-lethal, if you don't know how to correctly use it, it is of no good to you and can actually cause you to be placed in greater danger.
