It depends on the culture, but women raise the children and are responsible for a certain amount of their primary education.

Women do a lot of labor, paid and unpaid, caring for adults who can't take care of themselves.

When women earn money outside of the home, and again this depends on the country or culture, they are more likely to spend it on household needs, especially health and nutrition. I am not just saying this; it is an essential assumption of microloan institutions. Hence giving impovershed women microloans has been proven to help improve their children's health and education, which has long term benefits.

Overall, improving the wealth (in the sense of money the woman can control), education, and health of a woman (including providing access to contraception) has been proven to have benefits that extend to everybody, especially the children. I read something somewhere that claimed the inverse was also true: the more women lacked freedoms, basic rights, and basic needs, the worse the overall development of the country or culture would be.

im attempting to write an essay on the role of women in the development of the enlightenment and i intend to take a positive standpoint, but i cant seem to string my facts into a good essay. i've got little bits and pieces like mary wollstonecraft and women as heads of salons and coffehouses. anyway, if you have remotely any idea what im talking about i would LOVE your help

It sounds to me like you are off to a good start writing about women as running salons, this was a highly significant role of intellectual women in the 18th century. In The Cambridge Illustrated History of France, Colin Jones writes:

'The salon became an instrument of intellectual, and thereby political, power. It was said that to enter the Academie Francaise, for example, one had first to receive the approval of the salon of Madame de Lambert. Salons also had a powerful impact over public taste: Madame Geoffrin's salon was said to be important in winning critical acclaim for new artistic and literary works. The "Czarina of Paris" as she was called, was thus an important disseminator of Enlightenment values and shaper of public opinion.

The influence of the salons was probably declining from the 1770s as new organs of sociability and opinion-forming developed (masonic lodges, clubs, and so on). The dominance of women became a target of criticism. The salonnieres were seen as aristocratic bluestockings, who rendered politics and politicians effeminate. This misogynistic attack was launched from within th eEnlightenment. Jean-jacques Rousseau's view, that women should be excluded from politics and should stay at home and bring up children, was influential right across the political spectrum. The ideology of "seperate spheres" would be taken further in the REvolutionary and Napoleonic periods.'
