Is 357 Magnum a good self-defense caliber?

I feel the need to buy a gun for self defense. I was looking at a sales flyer for the Ruger SP-101 3" barrel revolver. It chambers 357 magnum. Is 357 magnum a big enough caliber to stop an intruder, or should I consider something bigger like a 40 cal or 45?
Also, is $409 a good deal for that particular revolver?

AJ, the .40 S&W and the .45 acp are not bigger than the .357 Magnum (only wider). Moreover, the .357 Magnum is the best man-stopper yet.

I own several .357 Magnums included an older Ruger Security Six with the 2-n-3/4" barrel. This one came before the SP-101 and is a bit larger and one of my nightstand guns. A .357 Magnum is plenty for personal/home defense. Consider using frangible bullets if it is strictly a home-defense weapon as the .357 will go though a lot of dry wall. Frangible ammuntion cost more but won't go through drywall endangering others sharing your home or living in the next apartment.
