Quick Self Defense
Has anyone here ever had to use Judo for self defense?
Hi, I have recently taken up Judo, and I am really enjoying it at the moment and I think I am learning very quick and doing well. Now I understand that judo is very effective if you was confronted in a street fight, as alot of the throws dont require you to be wearing a Gi and you could use the oppositions jacket or coat to grab onto. Has anyone on here who does Judo ever had to use it for self defense? I am just curious, just something that has crossed my mine. thank you
Oh yeah, on more times than I can count.
First, most of the throws in Judo can be done from modified holds, grabbing someone's elbow and behind the head, or as I like to do from over/under grips.
You also have to look at what throws and moves are not truly Gi dependent. Obviously you are not throwing anyone with Morate Seionage without a Gi.
However Ippon Seionage, Osoto Gari, and Ogoshi have been staples of self defense and military hand to hand curriculum for years. All are easily done without the Gi period.
As you progress in your Judo you will learn even more, and the various ways of modifying a throw when you have a full understanding of it.
Personally I have choked out about twice the amount of guys I have thrown in self defense scenarios, I quick shove on the shoulder and a dynamic move and you can have a guy in Hadaka Jime with a quickness (Rear Naked choke for you non Judo folks and MMA fans).
Many of the principles of Judo such as Tai Sabaki and the movements of Judo are very effective once you can truly grasp them.
The funniest thing is that you will find after you have trained in Judo sometime that these moves and modifications occur automatically. You find just wrestling with buddies how your throws can be used without a Gi, you develop autonomous reflexes. For me when people do certain actions I just react, no thinking involved, they just step a certain way or get into a certain zone and the move comes without me realizing it.
It has happened with embarassing results before as well, several times when "play wrestling" with females I have accidently @ss over teakettle thrown them. Several times just wrestling around with buddies I have caused injuries... (believe it or not most people do not know how to fall).
I remember the first time I got into a physical altercation after years of Judo. There was no thought involved what so ever, I reacted and put the guy out of commission before even realizing what had happened.
But yeah, when you train properly you develop to the point that you attain Mushin. Or Mushin no shin. I used to think that was all a bunch of hooey, especially when my early training in Martial Arts didn't ever help me acheive it. But as I learned proper training, alive training, with full speed, high intensity sparring, after years of doing it I found I had developed it when I got into an actual fight.
I find I get there many times even during professional fights, some moves just come and are just there.
Keep it up and you will find out for yourself, hopefully not by having to actually use your Judo in a physical confrontation, but through other means that don't involve violence.
