What would be an ok pistol for self defense and home protection?
If you are a newbie to firearms or have limited experience with them I would go with a 9mm. Very easy to manage the recoil and to learn on. It is also the cheaper of the other defensive calibers such as the .40, .45acp, and etc. I suggest going to the range at least once per month after of course a handgun safety class as well as a tactical training course. Practice makes perfect.
As for the handgun itself...That is up to what fits your wallet and hand best. The gun that feels best in your hand ist he one you will shoot best with. If the one that feels best to you is more then you would like, save the extra and wait. It is not good to settle. It can be very expensive in the long run. My first handgun was one that I could afford and not only did I not like the caliber (.40) but the gun jammed constantly even after taking it to a gun smith.

The XD is my favorite at about 550 or so by me (Chiacgo Suburb). The nice thing about the XD is the grip angle, the xternal safety does not interfer with speed, and it comes with a holster, magazine pouch and speed loader free; and from what I have read if you buy before the end of January 09 you get two extra mags.
The Ruger SR9 is a smooth handgun. Ruger is very reliable and inexpensive. I got mine for 440 about a year ago maybe a year and a half.
The Taurus is a very smooth gun. It fits your hand like a glove. Very light on recoil and you cannot beat Taurus' lifetime warranty on the gun not the owner. So years on down the road when you pass it on to your son and then he to his it is still covered. This also includes user error. My friend got his for just above 500.
All guns have Holster options but the XD has a lot more than the other two. I like the BlackHawk CqC holsters. Fobus is my second favorite.
