Non Lethal Weapons Self Defense

If you could use non-lethal means to defend yourself, your family, and/or your friends, would you?

Non-lethal meaning it won't kill the person trying to hurt or kill someone important to you or yourself. Examples, use martial arts or other defense training techniques, to restrain someone, knock them out, kick them in the balls, break their arm or leg, take gun or knife from them, etc. Also, other non-lethal weapons, bean bags, rubber bullets, rubber pellets, tear gas, smoke bomb, pepper spray, tazer, etc. or other tecchnology, high pitch noise that makes someone drop down and cover their ears, extremely bright light, net, blanket over head, rug flip, anything that can be done that won't kill the person or is not meant to kill them. If you could do this, instead of killing, would you rather do this non-lethal stuff for self defense? Asuming you have something like this or have the know how to use non-lethal force techniques. Or would you still kill in certain situations?

What is a good Self Defense weapon?

I'm going to a college in a big city, so I'm afraid I'll get robbed or something along those lines. I'm wondering what would be a good self defense weapon that is
1. hidden
2. legal
3. non lethal

It doesn't matter if you aren't trained to use them. The best self defense is to be aware of your surroundings. Then run away as fast as you can.

By the way a 9mm is lethal in more than the areas that smiling jack listed. If you hit someone with it you will be charged for assault with a lethal weapon. If I hit someone with one and get caught, I would be charged with committing a murder with a lethal weapon.

A pecil can be a lethal weapon.
