self defense technique or martial art?

1)what you will prefer??self defense methods like krav maga or pure martial arts like karate,akido????

I favor martial arts over some of the other things like Krav Maga for a couple of reasons. First most martial arts usually stresses practice and repetition and developing your skills to ever higher levels. Those are aspects that are needed in order to be successful and effective in most self-defense situations.

Second is the fact that no two self-defense situations are the same and martial arts provides a number of skills, techniques, and ways of using them to more adequately deal with a situation and allowing for that person to select from a variety that which best fits the situation I think. The cookie cutter or one size fits all approach that Krav Maga takes leaves a person sometimes limited in their approach because of this and how they might be able to better respond and meet that situation I think.

As for which art I would favor I would say Muay Thai because it is less linear in nature. While both arts are quite good I find the more linear styles less effective because they really put the emphasis on strong technique and the strength of your attack which are important aspects I think but there is more than one way to skin a cat. The use of angles for instance which some styles also heavily emphasize is one of the reasons for their breaking off from their original more linear styles and one of the things I like more over those more linear styles that they originated from.

What would you recommend is a good martial arts school in the tidewater area of Virginia?

I am looking to attend a martial arts school ranging in one of the following styles, Muay Thai Boxing, Krav Maga, Aikido, MMA, Ninpo-Jitsu. Either way i'm looking for a style that works. I prefer a style that actually works as a self defense style. I don't have time for schools that teach pretty technique That gets your ass kicked on the streets. In my years in the ring(for fun with friends and friends of friends) these styles proved to be real challenges. so if there are other styles that work please tell me that as well this is all research for I plan on adopting a style.
I am in the process of doing my own research, but would like the opinion of people who have attend the schools in the local area good and bad.

I know of a really good TKD school in Hampton, Va; but that's not on your list. I would suggest you just look around--check the yellow pages, ask around, that sort of thing.
