What constitutes self defense killing?

For most states what type of situation allows you to use lethal force to defend yourself? I know some states have different laws but what are the general requirements so that you don't go to jail for murder. Lethal force includes guns, knifes, improvised weapons, and deadly hand to hand attacks.

I am not a lawyer, and you should consult an actual attorney for the specifics in your area. As such, here's what I've been told:

Self-Defense is called an affirmative defense -- you're telling the jury that yes, you did kill the other person, but there was a complete and reasonable expectation that you were in imminent threat of death, and there was no other way for you (or a person you were protective) to survive but to kill the person.

It's generally assumed that if you can demonstrate that the force you used was reasonable under the circumstances, and that his death occurred in using reasonable force, then you're supposed to be found not guilty. That said, it's still up to a jury to determine whether or not your force was reasonable, and there are some juries that, no matter what the situation, they just don't believe that you have the right to kill another person to save your own life.

Shouldn't killing in self defense be classified as murder?

Isn't it the epitome of arrogance, to claim a right to kill someone just because they are trying to kill you. As if you life is so important you have to defend it? Killing is killing and it is wrong! This is the attitude that triggers violence in society. People feel justified, so they commit violent acts against others, nations go to war because they claim to be defending themselves. No one has a right to take a life FOR ANY REASON!
To buttercup and others who have asked, yes, I and my family are willing to accept our fate should we be threatened with bodily harm.

You are not OBLIGATED to defend yourself, you are just ALLOWED to.
