Is Karate Good For Self Defense
Is Karate good for self defense?
Is Karate good for self defense? I mean traditional Karate.
Karate was developed with the main purpose in mind to be used in self defense...not fighting. It is one of the few arts, when taught properly will enable a person to develop their entire body, mind and spirit to understand how to survive an attack. The problem is most people want an over night success story and are not willing to put the time and effort into gaining that ability. I always tell my students after 6 months you will know if you want more training and that is it. After one year you will know if you can get good at it. After two years you can handle yourself against most average blow hards out there. After 10 years you will only struggle fighting other highly trained martial artists unless you are simply better than them. After 30 years you will realize you really do not know anything.
Anyone who comes up to tell me Karate doesn't work or this or that martial art is better gets a big laugh in their face, invited to my dojo to workout with myself and my black belts....and guess what...only a few ever showed up and their minds were quickly changed.
All this MMA crap has not proven anything but that some systems are effective in the cage for sport. Machida uses Shotokan Karate and he has beaten some of the best. His fights are not fancy or colorful nor even high paced but he is using very effective Karate strategy which is very important in real fights. People simply do not stop and think that the average joe out there with karate "experience" who got beaten up or lost a fight was not an expert, was not even a long time practitioner. Go and tell people like Tak Obata, Fumio Demura, Shoshin Nagamine and Kenneth Funakoshi that Karate does not work, try and fight them and you may or may not live.
Karate is very effective.
Edit - Aditya J are you a master? How many years did you study? Who was your Sensei? You clearly have no experience with authentic Karate for every fact you stated is totally incorrect.

Is Karate Good For Self Defense
Which is better training for self-defense, karate or boxing?
Not sport, but street self defense.
I can see some advantages to both: boxing develops great punching skills, and you're used to opponents trying to punch you in the head (probably the most common street attack). And you get lots of sparring practice (though you can get this in karate too).
Karate though, give you perhaps a more well-rounded arsenal, and tends to be more self-defense oriented, rather than sport (gloves, only hit above the belt, no foul tactics).
When I said uses gloves, no foul tactics, only above the belt, I was referring to boxing practices, not karate training practices.
Track is the best, it gets you out of there no matter what.
