Impact Self Defense
Another bullet question?
So I am looking for a good self defense bullet. I hope I never have to use it but if I do have to defend myself I want 1 shot and its over...
So my choices for bullets are the Nosler Ballistic Tip for the .308.
160gr
168gr
180gr
Now again I want a bullet that breaks immediately upon impact and causes major damage (which the Nos Ballistic Tip does) but will not deflect easily when hitting clothes, windows or any other type of barrier. Which grain of bullet the heavier of lighter? I would think the heavier would perform the best but what do you guys think.
People generally do not use high powered rifles for self defense even if they are short action.
.308's are used as anti personnel rifles (I detest the use of the word sniper on this site), and for hunting large animals.
Over penetration is going to be a problem. So is wielding a long barrel gun.
Unless they are shooting at you, you can not justify self defense outside of 10'.
I know what grain I would use for taking down an elk or large deer, but that's not what you're really asking is it?

best self defense round?
I hear again and again the .357 mag or sig, 125 grain semi jacketed hallow point is the best self-defense round. I'm a little new to guns, but how come something bigger (in JHP) wouldn't be more effective, like a .44 mag, .454, or a .500 mag? Wouldn't a bigger the bullet expand further with more impact, thus causing more internal damage and a bigger exit wound? I guess I'm asking why a bigger gun isn't more effective.
Also, in self defense, would a .45 acp risk shooting thru a person and into an innocent person with hallow points (or FMJ), or will they stay in the bad guy? Thanks.
I meant "hollow"
A man is only so deep. A 44 magnum is really designed to go deeper and then expand so it works well as a hunting round. People are pretty shallow. A handgun round meant to penetrate the shoulders of a grizzly bear and then open up in his vitals will blow right through your average person without expanding much at all.
If you lined up 3 people, it would be HELL on the 3rd guy!
However, worry less about what the bullet that HITS the target is doing, worry more about the shots that miss.
That is the key to both good self defense guns AND safety...hitting the target. Shot placement trumps gun power in the vast majority of circumstance. A 380 ACP you can controll and shoot well is better than a 45 ACP you cannot shoot well.
So basically, what is BEST varies from individual to individual, and changes as that individual increases in skill.
Still, the basic 9mm in a full sized handgun is something that will be good for you for YEARS of heavy shooting and training.
Another great option is a medium framed 357 magnum revolver with a 4" to 6" barrel and adjustable sights. See, a 357 magnum revolver can also shoot 38 specials, so you have access to inexpensive, low kick ammo, as well as some real hot dogs for when your skill has improved to where you can control them and place quick, accurate follow-up shots
