whats the best self defense/home defense weapon?

Shotgun - 12ga - bird-shot - Remington 870. Any type that you are familiar with and practice, practice, practice with will do nicely. Did I mention practice? You can never practice enough, ever!

A firearm in the house does not make that home more dangerous to the children in the house. I am 46, I have a 56 year old brother, we grew up in a house with firearms, we haven't died yet!

However, if it is known that you own firearms, your home is less likely to be invaded. Criminals don't like to work hard. Criminals don't want an armed conflict. The police can't respond in time. I'm sorry policemen/women, but it is doubtful that you can respond to my home in time to protect me and mine. That's my job anyway. And thanks for the backup!

is the mossberg maverik 88 a could self / home defense shotgun?

is it reliable, accurate and easy to maintain.
also would it make a good hunting gun. not really interesting in hunting birds but someday i might try it.
also can it except accessories like an 870 or 500

i have 2 88's. one i have had for a long time and it has been fired probably 3000 rounds or more. i like it better than any shotgun i have ever had, including some that were alot more expensive. the second one i just bought recently and i have never fired yet. i would suggest them to anyone who is looking to buy a shotgun. i wont say that you cant buy a better shotgun, but i would definitely say that you can't buy a better one for the same amount of money. as far as hunting, it depends on what kind of game you want to hunt and what kind of barrel you want your shotgun to have. mine is a 28" modified, and it does very well for clay targets and for small game such as birds, squirrels, rabbits, and so on. i have shot it so much and i am used to it and i can shoot more accurate with it than any shotgun i have.

as far as self defense is concerned, that's what i bought the second maverick for. it is an 18.5 inch barrel with the larger capacity magazine tube. if my home was being invaded, i cant think of many things i would prefer over a good 12 gauge shotgun. as far as i am concerned, you cant get much better for close quarter warfare. they have tremendous knockdown power, they are safe and reliable, and it will be easier to hit your target than with a rifle or pistol. some people may have concern about recoil, but to me it is not a factor. it's not as bad as some make it out to be, and besides, if you are scared to death and fighting for your life, i wouldn't think you would feel it anyway.

for accesories, the maverick 88 will accept almost anything made for a mossberg 500. before you actually buy something, you might want to check first, but as far as i know, there are very few things for the 500 that will not fit the 88.
