Guns Used For Self Defense

What types of self defense can be used on college campuses in the United States?

You can't bring a gun, of course, but what are some more subtle methods for a dorm room, like a knife, pepper spray, axe handle etc. that are usually permitted?

Don't worry, you have plenty of options. Of course, this will vary depending on your specific schools rules and regulations. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

First items to consider are products specifically marketed towards self defense, this will include, but not limit yourself to

-pepper spray (please note the discharging pepper spray in your room will make you very unpopular with your roomates)
-tazers/stun guns, while some may argue its effectivness, they are much better than nothing, of course check with your college first as in many places they are restricted
-expandable batons, the take up little to know room and are easily hidden, they may not have the "take down" ability that other bludgeons might have, but they are quite effective

If these are out of the questioon, then there are loads of other items that make great improvised weapons without raising too much of an eyebrow

-baseball bat/hockey stick/golf club or other sporting good items make great clubs. Taking some sort of stick based fighting course such as escrima will infinetly help you in training

-maglite or other large solid flashlights make great weapons and are useful for blinding the eyes of an assailent before striking

-Heavy duty walking sticks such as the cold steel line of sticks http://www.coldsteel.com/sticksportal.html
are designed specifically for self defense

-common hand tools such as hammers and large wrenches

-buy a cheap walmart pool stick, the bottom half makes a wonderful improvised fighting stick

-a fire extiguisher, a quick spray on someone followed by a swing will do wonders

-if you take any martial arts that involve weapons, such as kendo or arnis, having your training supplies around wouldn't seem out of the ordinary

Now as far as using a knife for self defense, I have trained in knife fighting for many years and if there one thing I've learned... its NEVER get into a knife fight. If its a last resort then its better than nothing. But in general, a knife should be more of a tool than a weapon. Check with your colleges rules before bringing a knife on campus.

This is just a quick off the top of the head list, the options are limitless. Just make sure you train with whatever you choose to use. Heck, even a can of spam in a long tube sock is nothing to scoff at.
