Ground Self Defense

if a kid hit you and u push the kid to the ground, would that count as self defense?

i was playing volleyball at a park and a kid came up to me and punch me in the face two time, so i push the kid(in his face) to the ground. can i call this self defense?

Yes unless you threw him 15 foot with the push. If you were in public then surely you have witnesses to back you up?

whats the best martial art that can be used for self defense on the street?

I want to learn a martial art, as to which style/type i don't know it must be a striking form, i'm not a fan of ground based arts and i enjoy allot of footwork (Kicking etc) and It must be very effective for self defense I'm not looking for the most flashy art, but rather the most practical. any suggestions?

Yes, Krav Maga would be good for street fighting. And Cole is right. Footwork is scarcely used while street fighting and kicking above the waist is a BAD idea. But if you are dead set on learning footwork, then might I suggest Tae Kwon Do as another option? Tae Kwon Do translates to: Hand and foot fighting techniques, so you'd be working with your feet half of the time (kicks, sweeps) and you hands the rest of the time (punches, blocks, holds, chops, palm attacks, finger attacks). (Tae Kwon Do does employ knees and elbows for striking as well.) I don't know a lot about Krav Maga, but Tae Kwon Do does take some practice and dedication. You have to put time into mastering the techniques, but once mastered they are highly effective. Especially the oldest styles of Tae Kwon Do. They focus on self defense and technique. In the oldest forms of Tae Kwon Do, technique had nothing to do with being flashy or appealing; it's about moving your body in all the right places so you are more effective as a martial artist. At my Moo Do Won, (martial arts school/center) we also learn forms/katas, take-downs (forcing attacker to the ground my means of flipping over the shoulder or something equivalent to that), fighting steps (which simualte different street fighting scenarios), and stick fighting (bong sool). There are also tons of other life lessons you can learn from Tae Kwon Do, so that's a plus. If you do start looking into Tae Kwon Do, be careful because there are newer forms out there that only focus on what looks good at tournaments, not what you can do to save your life in a dangerous situation.

Good luck finding the martial art that is right for you! Just know that technique does not equal flashy and what you learn not only varies from martial art to martial art, but from martial arts school to martial arts school. I hope I helped in some way!
