Grappling Self Defense

Best self-defense course for a woman?

I'm 5'1 and 98lbs. I obviously don't have much upper body strength, and I'm not an avid exerciser. I was thinking Filipino Martial arts and have some interest in Krav Maga. Are those completely impractical? Not really interested in anything with grappling, so that pretty much throws Jiu Jitsu out the window. I really want to be able to defend myself and react in certain situations impulsively. I'm really a petite woman and have been confronted a few times and almost always respond with that deer in the headlights look. Something needs to be done! :]

I would recommend Aikido or Wing Chun.
Aikido uses joint locks and clever positioning to paralyze and evade your opponent. It is one of the main principles taught in women's self defense courses. But, since it is so complicated, It can take much longer to get good at, or have a muscle memory response.
If you're more into an offensive stand, try Wing Chun. It was originally invented by a women as she was preparing for a duel against a king who wanted to marry her. She creamed him. It uses fast punches and dodges to outwit and knock your opponent down. It's a bit easier, and is one of the styles Bruce Lee (a famous martial artist) learned to help him improve.
Krav Maga Is generally more violent, and relies more on upper body strength, so it might not be you're best option.

Whatever you pick, try hard, and you should be able to defend against anything.

Grappling Self Defense

Best self defense/martial arts for real life?

I'm going to some third world countries, and I bartend in a pretty ghetto bar where fights happen alot. What's the most effective martial arts for modern day application. I don't want to learn how to defend against ninja weapons. I don't think wrestling/grappling is good if a guy has six friends who are kicking me when I'm down. If someone comes at me with a gun, knife, bat, or fist, which martial arts teaches how to defend quickly and efficiently before more trouble shows? I've heard alot about the Isreali body guard class, can't remember what it's called. Anyone? Thanks.
