Self-Defense jiu jitsu?
I am currently training in gracie jiu jitsu and we learned the amercana lock, if the guy is on top of me and I reverse the situtaion so i well be on top of him and did the amercana lock and broke his shoulder, is that excessive force? I tried to tell him i dnt want to fight and i might break his shoulder since i havnt fully masterd it yet, but he keeps trying to pick a fight with me and all i do is run but its getting to the point i cant anymore so will i be in trouble if i broke his arm?
Assume this fight is just that a real fight. Well it's going to be a gray area because even if you intend to only control you opponent shoulders go. If you stop there I would say you are only defending yourself. Now if you get up and throw a head kick you are up for assault charges.

What will be your CHOICE, skill over rank/belt, please read?
There's a BJJ school that teaches 8 sessions per month for $45, but the instructor teaches combative BJJ and he's not giving ranks or belts. I've attended a couple of classes and it is really street self defense utilizing BJJ techniques.
Then there's Gracie Barra school nearby who charges $20 per session or $30 a week, $120/month, who can give me perhaps a blue belt after a year or 2. BUT I can ONLY attend 1 session per week.
What school should I go for, will I be wasting my time on the cheap school for one year, or go for GB once a week and hope that I can be a blue belt after a year? Of course there will also be skill gained, but the concern here is the class fee.
I have always wondered what good my black belt would do me in a confrontation. After being in many such confrontations (worked as a bouncer a long time) I can tell you the belt is of no use to you. It was my skills that saved my day time after time. I never used that rank or belt once. You can either defend or not, and the belt (rank) doesn't enter into it. You will spend less, and gain more knowledge in the combat class.
